Sebago Lake

Sebago Lake is the second largest lake in Maine, and provides both public water supply and recreation. It is the primary water supply for the Portland Water District (PWD), which serves the greater Portland area. The lake supports a variety of recreational values including camping, motorboating, canoeing, fishing, and swimming.

PWD and stakeholders including the Town of Standish, the Maine Department of Conservation Boat Launch Program, and the Maine CDC Drinking Water Program, are considering options for increased source water protection to avoid contamination events that might otherwise require investment in a filtration plant. Two options are developed in this case study – one to relocate the boat ramp in the Lower Bay, and another to increase good housekeeping practices to prevent or quickly remediate any contamination.
